Best Cheap Gaming Laptops Under $1000
The hardcore gamers with limited budget are searching for the best laptops and they usually visit a lot of web sites and read reviews. First of all, they search for laptops that cost fewer than 1000 dollars but they can pay extra money if the laptop is coming with great components, here is my Ultimate Guide for the Best Gaming Laptop for people with high budget. When I was a professional Game Tester, the first thing I have to notice is the processor of the laptop, which is the brain of the whole machine. Also, the graphic card is very important, but it can dramatically raise the price of the laptop if it’s a good one. Also, special features such as backlit keyboard which is very essential for a gamer during the night time and the fans of the laptop can increase the price. All you have to do in order to make sure that you are purchasing the best laptop is to compare the prices and the ability of every laptop you see. There are some laptops on Amazon.com, some of them are created for gamers by the time others are normal laptops but very good for a gamer. The gaming laptops are also cheaper than the gaming PCs and the components are almost the same, although a lot of people are saying that PCs are better than laptops when it comes about to games. However, laptops are cheaper and they can be carried easier, offering a lot more benefits than a PC, that you can only use at home. If you are interested in cheaper laptops you should check our list of gaming laptops under 600.
Just recently, we pitted 4 gaming laptops under $1000 against one another to see which of them will be crowned as the best. We have the ASUS N550JV-DB72T 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop, Lenovo IdeaPad Z710 17.3-Inch Laptop (59406361) Black, MSI Computer Corp. MSI GE60 2OE-003US;9S7-16GC11-003 15.6-Inch Laptop, and the Alienware 14 ALW14-1250sLV 14-Inch Gaming Laptop. All 4 laptops more or less had the same specifications (4th Gen i-7 processors, an average of 16GB DDR3 RAM, and an average of 2GB for the graphics). It was a very tough choice, given that our final two choices were the MSI GE60 2OE-003US and the Alienware 14 ALW14-1250sLV.
And the WINNERs are…
Alienware 14 ALW14-1250sLV
We have chosen the Alienware 14 ALW14-1250sLV as the best gaming laptop under $1000 for good reasons. While these laptops were reviewed individually, the crowning of the best laptop actually took place by benchmarking all 4 laptops. All four laptops ran Grand Theft Auto 5 on high setting and max resolution possible for each and the difference between the Alienware 14 ALW14-1250sLV and the rest of the laptop was very noticeable. The main focus of our decision was to determine which of these units were meant for gaming for long periods of time.
Let’s review what’s inside the Alienware:
- Processor: 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-4200M processor (3MB Cache, up to 3.1GHz)
- Display: 14″ WLED HD (1366 x 768) Anti-Glare Display
- Operating system: WIN 7 Home Premium, 64Bit, SP1
- Memory (RAM): DIMM,8GB,2X4G,1600MHZ,DDR3
- Optical drive: DVD±RW,8X,PSNC,XLOB
- Video graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 750M with 1GB GDDR5
But let’s also talk about what separates the Alienware from the rest. The chassis and casing of the laptop is made of magnesium alloy frame and anodized aluminium that protects both LCD and inner components. These materials also help with the cooling, apart from the copper heat sink that cools the unit from the inside.
Even when we awarded the Alienware 14 as the best laptop around $1000, we still feel like the MSI GE60 deserves the title as well. We did mention that MSI GE60 garnered the 2nd place, but the other writers felt that the MSI GE60 was the deserving one.
Now why did we choose the MSI GE60? Let’s go over the specifications.
- Operating System: Windows 8 (64-bit)
- Display: 15.6″ FHD (1920×1080) with Touch Screen
- Processor: Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4GHz
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750 2G DDR3
- Memory: 8GB DDR3
- Storage: 1TB (5400 RPM ) + 32GB ASUS WebStorage2
- Speakers: Stereo speakers with ASUS SonicMaster Lite technology
- Battery: 59Whrs, 4000MAH, 4S1P, 4-cell Li-ion polymer Battery Pack with up to 5.5 hours1
- Dimensions: 15.08″ x 10.04″ x 1.09″ ~ 1.09″(W x D x H)
- Weight: 5.9 lbs
While we bordered on performance for the main criterion, others pointed out that the MSI GE60 should’ve won simply because of the way the games looked on its beautiful screen. The Alienware, being 14 inches, could not compete to how the games were displayed on the MSI’s screen. We managed to give both laptops another chance and we found that open world games like Skyrim looked so much better on the 15 inch screen. We also tried it on Titanfall and the graphics were too beautiful for words. This doesn’t mean that we are rescinding our decision. Alienware deserves the title, but we also feel that the MSI GE60 deserves it too.
We went on another survey and we asked if people wanted bigger screens on their gaming laptop. Out of the 1000 participants, 65% wanted a bigger screen so this was a big bonus for MSI.
The performance between Alienware and MSI were noted to be toe-to-toe with one another, so if you were to buy either one, you can’t go wrong with the decision.
As mentioned earlier, all 4 units ran Grand Theft Auto 5 at high settings and max resolution with the Razer Game Booster to enhance the gaming performance at the highest level and to measure FPS. Right then and there, we gauged the amount of FPS drop after 2 hours of non-stop gaming. The firsts to go were the Lenovo and the ASUS units. According to the testers, the laptop got hot enough that it was slightly uncomfortable at the palm rest. 30 minutes past the 3rd hour, the MSI gave in to the heat and a little heat was already felt underneath the palm rest. The Alienware, even at 4 hours and 50 minutes, did not give in to heat. The chassis was more than capable of dissipating heat. This was more than enough to give the Alienware the medal, but we decided to kick things up a notch.
We mentioned that we had a Razer Game Booster that helped us monitor the FPS of each game. Right about the same time the units started heating, we noticed a drop in the FPS by an average of 5. This means that when the laptop becomes hot enough, the performance becomes affected, so we say goodbye to long periods of gaming. The MSI followed suit after 4 hours, compared to it heating after 3 hours. The Alienware was fairly consistent as it dropped by 2 FPS then recovered instantly.
We let the units rest after 6 hours and 2 days later, we tested it with another game: Skyrim. The results were the same, so it all boiled down to the Alienware 14 ALW14-1250sLV.
Alienware is probably the most expensive of the bunch, as it’s priced at an average of $990 to $1060. If you are into gaming, the Alienware 14 ALW14-1250sLV is the right choice for you.
