MSI Computer Corp. MSI GT70 2OC Gaming Laptop Review

This laptop is a perfect example of the modern contemporary high end gaming laptop. If you are looking a quiet, powerful laptop that can do it all, then I strongly suggest that you take a look at the MSI GT70.

Hardware and Specs:

When I first picked up this thing, I was genuinely impressed by its specs. This guy was one of the very first gaming laptops to sport Intel’s next generation architecture, the Ivy Bridge. The laptop comes stick with an Intel Core i7 3.4 GHz processor, 16 Gb of DDR3 ram, a 750 Gb hard drive, the NVidia GeForce GTX 770M graphics card. While this means that the laptop will have a whole lot of power, I was struck in particularly by the laptops above average battery life, especially for a desktop replacement heavy duty gaming laptop of this caliber. I really noticed the difference that the brand new Ivy Bridge Processors make, and when combined with the GeForce GTX 670M with 3 GB of dedicated video memory, that’s a force to be reckoned with.

Look and Feel:

What really struck me about the laptops physical look is its sleek design, especially considering its monstrous size. Like most high end desktop replacements, this behemoth comes in at around 8.6 pounds spread over a 17.3 inch display. I’ll admit, the laptop is a bit bulky in the back, but it tappers down and becomes a bit thinner towards the front edge. Unlike other loud and colorful designs in the same desktop replacement class (like the Alienware), this laptop is very unassuming, with a simple black interior and exterior. This simple finish is a nice switch from some of the more flashy alternatives on the market, and is certainly a plus for the GT70.

The GT70 comes equipped with an eye-catching 1920 x 1080p display, which is notable considering its rather large size ( 17.3 inches across). While I found that the viewing angles can seem a tad bit shallow at some times, this is really not a problem at all when gaming head on, and is still a pleasure to game on. I never spend too much talking about the audio system for these laptops, as I chose to game with headphones, however the GT70’s Dynaudio sound system is a very nice touch; loud and clear, allowing the audio to flow richly form the machine.

Keyboard and Track pad:

The keyboard and trackpad are as important as anything on a gaming laptop, as that is what you will be using when gaming. The mechanical keyboard is a step above most other laptop keyboards I have used, and gives off a satisfying click each time a key is pressed. The multicolored LED backlight is a nice touch as well.  While I am not crazy about touchpads in general, I thoroughly enjoyed using this one. Unlike many other laptops Ii have used, this touch pad is well out of the way of the keyboard, which greatly decreases the chance of those frustrating palm activated cursor jumps.
